Nigel is very sad, his stomach is upset but he knows he has to do it. He knocks at Anne’s door. She opens the door with a wide smile. “Things aren’t going well, I have to leave you.” She’s not even the time to open her mouth, he’s already in the elevator. He goes out the building and puts on his earbud. He reaches the bus stop, gets on the bus, sits down on a seat near the window and rests his head on it staring at the city running outside the bus.
Nigel picks up the phone. He calls Anne. “Hello…It’s done Anne, I don’t want to ruin your life anymore” . Anne’s a bit confused. Nigel puts on his earbuds and start walking along the river towards the place they first met, it’s a misty night.
Anne gets to the Cafè, Nigel is sitting inside. She doesn’t know what is going on. He simply says “Anne, it’s over”. She looks at him, she doesn’t know what to say, he leaves. He gets on the car, switch on the car stereo and starts driving through the city aimlessly.

Guess what? Let me by Atu is a great song to listen for your break-up.

Atu is a 20-year-old Malawian producer from Ann Arbor, Michigan. Pictures on Silence is his latest work, released on 22 March. The ethereal future sound merge with his R’n’b attitude. The gentle melancholy female voices are sourrounded by some kind of ghostly presence.

Los Angeles-based artist Julia Holter just announced her third full length work and first album recorded in a studio Loud City Song, set to release on August 19th via Domino Records.

In Domino press page we read “the result is an album of enormous ambition – Holter taking inspiration from Collette’s 1944 novella Gigi and using it as a prism through which to explore her relationship with her hometown of Los Angeles and modern life universally, taking cues from the work of Joni Mitchell and the poetry of Frank O’Hara but forging those touch-points into something resolutely unique”.

Watch here the video for the first single World.

The sun shines in Venice and we are proud to make a great gift to all eclectic music lovers. Not simply we reached the Detroit-based bedroom-house mogul, lo-fi producer Christian Jay Sienkiewicz aka Coyote Clean Up for an interesting interview but he was so kind to make a special mixtape for EC including incredible post-house gems as he would like to say summer is getting closer. His album 2 Hot 2 Wait is now out via 100% Silk.

EC: How do you prefer to describe your music? Have you got word, a sentence or an haiku?

I don’t have a problem with the term “experimental electronica.” I think some Detroit dudes have a problem with the term “electronica” because they seemed to think it took the blackness out of techno and white-washed it for a larger audience. However, I am openly forever in debt to all the Detroit heads and I’m never trying to bite their sounds or ride off the hard work they’ve put into music. The term “experimental electronica” feels like a nice umbrella term that I grew up with… all the variety of music from the 90′s that developed that sound. I’m still not sure, but here’s is a haiku:

swirling sonic lights

crashing, smashing

float or sink

where am I going?

EC: Could you please tell us something about your working process? How do you make your music? What are your inspirations?

I will start with a small pattern of sounds or one sound. It could be a vocal sample, a melodic pad, or a minimal beat. From there I get into a groove and then continuously layer different sounds on top of each other until I reach a mood I’m comfortable with. Sometimes songs will end up sounding completely different then the original vibe I was going for, but that’s part of the fun. I gain inspiration from all walks of life… visual art, incidents, personal moods, bike rides, walks outside, etc. Obviously I gain inspiration from other musicians. Sometimes I will hear a track that will send me running to work on a track of my own – even though what I work on might not sound anything like what sparked my creativity at that moment.

EC: What are your current listenings and your favorite records ever?

I’ve been enjoying listening to all the radio shows on NTS. http://ntslive.co.uk/ Lukid’s new monthly radio show is amazing. Ben UFO and the Hessle Audio show on Rinse.FM always gets me going. I listen to everything from left field ambient music like Oval to post-punk and riot grrrl like Free Kitten. Die Monitr Batss, Rachel’s, The Frumpies “Babies and Bunnies”… Tortoise “TNT” … random hip-hop & R&B…A great release just came out on Astro:Dynamics (a label I will be working with very soon) called “Excavated Tapes 1992-1999 Vol 1.” by BAT. Very cool stuff. I think my all time favorite is Hugh Mundell’s “Blackman’s Foundation.”

EC: There is a sort of 100% Silk mood?

Amanda Brown, who runs 100% SILK, has such a clear, cool, and unique vision of what music is and should be. Amanda doesn’t even mess around on Facebook, Twitter, or social media. She’s not some internet nerd making dance music because it’s cool and she wants some internet popularity… she’s making and putting out records that she wants to because SHE thinks they’re cool. What she is doing is actually really unique these days! The combo of her being based in LA and the 100% SILK visual aesthetic really gives the records she puts out this warm… sunny.. nostalgic vibe that I love. There are a lot of dark gloomy days in Detroit, and with my own music here, I often feels like I fall into a dark hole. A lot of Detroit’s dance related music is rather melancholy and dark in odd ways. I was going through some personally dark times while putting together 2 HOT 2 WAIT … but I felt like Amanda forced the record out of me.. straight from Detroit to LA… and let it bleach in the California sunshine for a while…turning the vibe around completely for the better.. in my opinion. I’m a control freak to some extent… but by letting things fall out of my hands into someone else’s who has a clear vision and passion like Amanda does…. something real amazing and more complex than you might think happened. 100% SILK is also extremely prolific, 2 HOT 2 WAIT was the 44th release, I believe, and she started the label in 2011. Making tons of music myself, I love the idea of a tidal wave of new music constantly crashing into the musical world. There’s around 7 billion people on the planet – we can never have enough music.

EC: Are you planning an EU tour?

No dates lined up as of yet.. but the playing in the UK and Europe is one of my #1 goals right now. Putting out new material has been my main focus and I finally feel like I’ve gotten to a point where I’m ready to travel. I’ve been DJing and playing live with this project for quite sometime strictly in Detroit and I’m ready for some fresh faces and fresh dance floors. I hope to see you sooner than later!

Irina Gliudza is a talented Russian graphic designer with a solid working experience for magazines and adv agencies, recently resident at Fabrica and she just delivered a new, inspiring project: Making Art from Breaking Up. Check her works and read the interesting chitchat we had with her.

EC: Could you please tell us something about your working process? What are your inspirations?

When I start working on a topic, first of all, I try to understand what my personal attitude towards it is. Later, I usually talk with people around, get different points of view on the same topic and compare them with mine. I believe that more personal projects turn out to be more interesting for the public. That’s why, my feelings are my greatest inspiration. I pay close attention to my reactions and emotions and try to understand exactly why I feel that way.

EC: Are you now working on a specific project or something you are excited to tell us about?

In a few days I am going to International Poster and Graphic Design Festival in Chaumont, France. I will be presenting my personal social project, which was made during my one year internship at Fabrica, The Benetton Group Communication Centre in Treviso, Italy. It’s called «Making art from breaking-up», and it consists of 10 illustrations telling stories about break-ups and revenge on ex-lovers as well as a participatory project. This project transforms the destructive power of failed love into the positive power of creation. All illustrations are based on real-life stories. I am very curious about how it will work out and what kind of reaction I will get from the public.

EC: Have you got a word, a sentence or an haiku to describe your work?

Consistent. At least, I wish it is.

EC: Which is your favorite colour and does it appear often in your works?

I like black and white. Or a combination of black with very intensive colors like magenta or yellow. Very simple, but it works.

EC: Which is the role of music is your life?

I really envy people who can indeed appreciate music, who can feel and understand it. My relationship with music, is not that easy. A while back, I read a phrase that there are two most abstract kinds of art – music and typography. I think I do better with typography. And when I work – I prefer silence.

In the press we read “this album is the result of one person sitting alone in a room and creating something entirely personal, without the frustrations of organising large-scale sessions for other players or preparing scores”. Spontaneity, impulsiveness, improvised piano, vibraphone and percussion sessions, an old-fashioned approach to tell his inner feelings. We are talking about the new upcoming double LP Where We Were (due on summer via Denovali) from the Berlin-based English composer Greg Haines: “moments of quiet, slow moving textures can still be found, but they are nestled between upbeat, rhythmically-driven tracks that at times could even be considered for deployment on open-minded dancefloors”. Stream here some extracts and watch the album teaser.

You’re sitting on a wooden chair in a hallway outside the recording studio of one of your friends. He’s a dj. You’re reading a futile article on a mag, the article is about how much important is cleaning your wheel rims. A lot of noise’s coming out from the studio. A guy and his girlfriend are arguing about a collection of bottle caps he owns. They suddenly start fighting throwing each other your friend’s long play record. The guy runs fast outside the studio. He stops in front of you. He actively shakes the chair where you’re sitting holding the arms of the chair. Then he runs down the hallway and he disappears behind a corner.
If you’d find yourself in such a situation you will be probably listening to this song.

The long-awaited fourth album from graphic designer and co-manager of Ghost Box Records Julian House under the moniker of The Focus Group is now out. Rich tapestry of electronics, fuzzed guitar and processed exotic instrumentation together with fractured skipping rhythms and submerged melodies which mirror his collaged design work. The full length work was released with the help in studio from Broadcast. Stream here some psychedelic clips.

Copenhagen-based electronic producer Nick Eriksen aka Taragana Pyjarama will release the follow-up to last year’s acclaimed Tipped Bowls on June 24 via Wyrd Records. Energy vibes of synths in the teaser sound like we are facing dusk immersed in a wild landscape and something great is gonna happen. In a recent interview for 405 Nick says about the new work that “the overall theme has been grainy and distorted pictures of caves, particularly mysterious crystal caves. It’s magic in a way.”

We are proud to announce EC ‘ll host Taragana Pyjarama live show on May 25 at PopCorn Club in Venice.
